Pre-Timiskaming structurally controlled gold systems of the Val-d’Or – Malartic corridor: A key episode in the metallogenic evolution of the Abitibi greenstone belt
Although the bulk of the gold in the Abitibi is associated with the regional N-S shortening event (D3: orogenic gold) between ~2660‒2640 Ma (southern Abitibi) or synvolcanic (≥2695 Ma) in nature, significant gold is in ~2695 to ~2685 Ma (southern Abitibi) structurally-controlled pre-Timiskaming deposits. These deposits, commonly associated with calc-alkaline intrusions, have varied characteristics, and were strongly deformed during D3. The development of mineralized zones such as the South Zones at Goldex, the Deep zone at Kiena, and in the Marban area is an opportunity to further improve our understanding of a significant metallogenic episode of the Abitibi.
