Marc Bardoux

Chief Geologist
Barrick
  • A structural geologist by training, Marc Bardoux was a mentor to many UQAM students in the 1990s. He has been lending his expertise to the mining industry since 1986. He served as Chief Geologist for Newmont from 2003 to 2012 and has held a similar position at Barrick since 2012. He had the pleasure of working with François from 2012 until his retirement.

Contributions of François Robert in the Carlin district of Nevada

See program info

As an exceptional geoscientist François is one of the experts of the metallogenic framework of Nevada. His versatility has quickly allowed him to master the complexities of the tectonic framework that formed along the western margin of Laurentia. Francois applied his intellectual rigor and outstanding technical skills that has led to one of the best understanding of the structural controls of Carlin type deposits in a very damaged tectono-stratigraphic context and unique metallogenic assemblages. François rapidly gathered the physical and chemical attributes of Phanerozoic platform sequences (Lower Plate) and the overthrusted sequence of exotic sediments and volcanic rocks (Upper Plate). He also gathered the timing and critical emplacement of Mesozoic and Tertiary plutonic rocks that pierced and disturbed the Phanerozoic strata. To make it more complex yet several generations of Tertiary extension faults displaced all rock types and were even filled by thick modern cover sequences masking many direct evidences. Some of these younger faults are one of the principal components of the fluid pathway of Carlin type fluids that also migrated in certain stratigraphic horizons. To rapidly help resolve this complex framework Francois encouraged the use of very effective tools such as: 1) structural contours; 2) detailed field mapping and core logging focused on compressional faults and folds as well as extensional faults of significance; 3) reconstruction of palinspastic maps and high quality cross sections and level plans. With those highly efficient technical approaches combined to many other data sets Francois helped exploration teams across the region to accelerate their hit rate and discovery results in many cases in very blind places (up to 500m below surface) and thus consolidating Barrick position in its best mining district yet. Many discoveries in the Carlin district are directly attributable to the best practices implemented and supervised by Francois. The acquisition of Placer Dome is related to that vision and it is a major turning point in Barrick’s successes under Francois management and his colleagues.
